The great master Steinlen's poster for the opera "Helle", performed at the Theatre National de l'Opera, with it's sombre colours and softness of line, create a moody image for this tragic Greek opera.
"His poster career started in 1885, and produced a number of memorable images, making their point with clarity and insight. He was keenly attuned to the disadvantaged, and for all causes that aim at advancing simple human values. His warmth as a person can be seen in the way he often used his own family in his poster designs: his wife, daughter, even the family cats get shown again and again (see PL. 95 and PL. 170), always with tenderness and pride. The vigour of his concepts remains fresh to this day, and he is among the favourite collectible posterists of the belle epoque" (Wine Spectator, 110)
