Louise Stowell, a student of Dow, did only one poster, it was for the George P. Humprey bookstore in Rochester, N.Y. Our eye is immediately drawn to the central man reading in the book shop, his large hand blocks our view of his face, behind which we see a table of books stacked upward towards a street level window. The legs of passers-by are seen behind an elegant iron gate. They move toward the door where we see the legs of a gentleman starting to descend the stairs through the door into the bookshop. The design has brought us full circle almost imperceptively. The colours and style of the type further the effect. The entire composition is balanced and subdued. It welcomes us to come inside the quiet world of literature.
