Buntz Coffee tin, ca. 1930

“Heavily influenced by the work of Lucian Bernhard, Gipkens was a successful graphic designer in Berlin during the first half of the 20th century.” (Rennert)
KUPFERBERG GOLD poster by Gipkens, 1913

Gipkens was a self-taught poster artist who was extremely active both before and after World War I. He was employed by the prestigious firm, Hollerbaum & Schmidt, where he worked alongside such fellow design luminaries as Lucian Bernhard, Hans Rudi Erdt, Julius Klinger and Ernest Deutsch. He immigrated to the United States in 1933. His work is held in the collections of the Library of Congress and Victoria & Albert Museum.

A study of German commercial graphics.
This bound edition printed in 1927 is an important study of a great era of German graphic design : posters, packaging, advertising, book illustration, programs for theater, sports, etc. Profusely illustrated, mostly with tipped-in color plates of work by Bernhard, Hohlwein, Klinger, Preetorius, Gipkens, Kleukens, Cissarz, Pechstein and many others.
