This is Berthon's greatest masterpiece. Homage to it is seen in it's placement on the cover of many important poster reference books, such as Stanley Appelbaum's "The complete Masters of the Poster (Les Maitre de l'Affiche)" as well Victor Arwas's definitive study "Berthon & Grasset."

"This design by Berthon reveals various characteristic features of the fin de siecle (end of the century). The woman with long, flowing hair is stylized as a fragile, lilywhite 'princess.' The lily, delicately chased like a jewel, was frequently chosen as a symbol of innocent, spring like beauty and purity. Symbolism was predominant in poetry. The ideals of the 'happy few' were to remain aloof from the turmoil of the present with its restless masses and to achieve a way of life charged with spiritual emotion. The name 'L'Ermitage' is typical of a periodical, which upholds these ideals. The style, somewhat like framed stained-glass…" (Wine Spectator p.42)
