By the early 1890s, Edison's incandescent lights were encroaching upon gas lighting. But gas wasn't dead yet: by using gas heat to ignite a mantle made from thorium and cerium, chemists created a brilliant white light that could more than compete. In 1892 the Auer mantle was patented, and commercialized throughout Europe. This elegant poster brings Classical elegance in the service of modernity. (Rennert)

Maurice Realier-Dumas, a well known figure in the Societe des Artistes Français and it's salons, designed this very elegant vertical format poster for the "Incandescent Gas Lighting Company" (Auer system).
