The painter and lithographer Maurice Eliot was born in Paris. Eliot first studied in the atelier of Émile Bin, where he met Signac and Henri Rivière. Eliot then entered the Beaux-Arts, Paris, where he was a pupil of Adolphe Yvon and of Cabanel. Maurice Eliot was born in Paris, and specialised in Parisian subjects. For forty years Maurice Eliot taught pastel and drawing at the École Polytechnique.

He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, and was a founder member of the Salon d'Automne. Maurice Eliot was the brother of the writer and artist Jeanne Eliot. Maurice Eliot was highly regarded as a lithographer, but in fact produced very few lithographs. (Idbury Prints)

Not unlike the Maitre de L'Affiche series, L'Estampe Moderne was a portfolio printed between 1897-98, published by Imprimerie Champenois, Paris, contained 24 monthly portfolios, with four original lithographs in each. Each commissioned only for this series. Some of the contributing artists included Mucha, Rhead, Meunier, Ibels, Steinlen, Willette and Grasset.
