Paris park early 1900's

Gaston De Latenay
Painter in oil and watercolour, lithographer, etcher. He started his career in the 1880s as a painter of marine subjects and landscapes. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts between 1886 and 1893. Like many French artists of his day, Gaston de Latenay was deeply influenced by Japanese art.

He became interested in lithography in the 1890s, one of his first subjects being "Le Parc" in six colours for L'Estampe moderne. The subtle modulations of colour in this print reveal a very sensitive touch, which Gaston de Latenay developed over the coming decades in colour etchings, published first by Georges Petit and after the liquidation of Petit's stock by La Société de l'estampe moderne. Gaston de Latenay was born in Toulouse. (Idbury Prints)

Not unlike the Maitre de L'Affiche series, L'Estampe Moderne was a portfolio printed between 1897-98, published by Imprimerie Champenois, Paris, contained 24 monthly portfolios, with four original lithographs in each. Each commissioned only for this series. Some of the contributing artists included Mucha, Rhead, Meunier, Ibels, Steinlen, Willette and Grasset.
