"Thus the high water-mark of poster work was reached in England…with Maurice Greiffenhagen who, like Cheret, almost invariably chose a girl as a motive, and drew refined and charming woman with a dashing technique of line, mass, and colour. His style is admirably suggested in all but in the 'Pall Mall' (the weekly magazine) poster which for strength of composition and simplicity of motive equals anything produced in France " (C.Matlack Price, p.72)

Maurice Greiffenhagen was an English painter and illustrator, who turned increasingly to portrait painting from 1900. He became the head of Graphic deisgn at the Glasgow School of Art. Under his guidance important artists such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh were nurtured and the school attained an international reputation.
