Born 1931 in Cincinnati, OH, he was drafted into the US Army to serve in the Korean War in 1952. Returning home after the war, he studied drawing at the Art Academy of Cincinnati before working as an illustrator of comic strips and men’s magazines. In 1956, he moved to New York where he attended the Cooper Union. Soon after graduation, Wesselmann founded the Judson Gallery, along with Jim Dine and Marcus Ratliff. Beginning in the 1960s, with his Great American Nude series, Wesselman drew from Americana and media culture, to produce billboard-scaled paintings in flat bold colors. Like Dine, he was associated with the Pop Art movement but disagreed with being labeled as such. Through the following decades, the artist honed his idiosyncratic style while continuing to live in New York, NY until his death in 2004. Today, the artist’s works are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., among others. Often isolating segments of the body—red lips with a cigarette, a single nipple, or a stylish shoe—his artworks aim was to seize a viewer’s attention. 'The prime mission of my art, in the beginning, and continuing still, is to make figurative art as exciting as abstract art,' he once said of his work. Employing motifs which include Pinocchio, heart shapes, bathrobes, and tools, Dine produces colorful paintings, photographs, prints, and sculptures. Born in 1935 in Cincinnati, OH, he studied poetry at the University of Cincinnati before attending the University of Ohio where he received his BFA in 1957. After moving to New York in 1958, Dine became part of a milieu of artists which included Allan Kaprow and Claes Oldenburg, with whom he began to stage performances at sites in the city, these later became known as “Happenings.” By the early 1960s he had switched his focus towards painting, drawing on his interest in popular imagery and commercial objects. Though he shown alongside Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, Dine never considered himself a member of the Pop Art movement. The artist currently lives and works between New York, NY and Walla Walla, WA. His works are included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others. From the late 1950s, he was instrumental, together with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, in establishing Pop art as a movement, perceptibly altering the concept of visual art. Among much else, Rosenquist is known for his monumental formats which he embarked on in the 1950s and 60s. His inspiration came from his job as a billboard painter. Davie was the enfant terrible of post-war art, the first British artist – probably the first European artist – to embrace ’action painting’, to put himself physically in his pictures. Working stripped to the waist in a kind of Zen trance, Davie painted with a jazz freedom that blew away the cobwebs of the austerity-era art world. His exuberant improvisatory canvases had a ruthlessness, as he painted out passages of paint other artists would have killed to have created, in pursuit of a visceral anti-perfection, a sense of mystery and ritual that made the efforts of his British peers look positively effete in comparison. A maverick whose work is not easily categorized, Mr. Jensen was by age and training a contemporary of the older generation of Abstract Expressionists who came to recognition at the end of the 40's. Turning away from their gestural emphasis, he began to develop his own wayward style a decade later. He distilled the ideas he derived from theories of color, mathematics, science and ancient cultures into notated diagrams, which he then transmuted into paintings. His interest in the numerical systems of past civilizations led him to base works on architectural structures, notably those of Greece and Central America. A childhood illness of tuberculosis led to a long confinement, during which he began painting and writing.
