"The most beautiful business card that Nice could wish for... In the early 1960s, the mayor of Nice asked Chagall to design a poster to promote Nice and the Côte d'Azur. Chagall created this poster "Nice, Soleil, Fleurs" showing a mermaid holding a huge bouquet of flowers above the famous Baie des Anges (The Bay of Angels); the colour blue, Chagall's favourite colour, representing the Mediterranean. Printed in lithography by Chagall himself on the Mourlot presses, Paris." (Galerie123)

"Far above the Corniche, in the midst of a midnight blue, a mermaid hovers, clasping and smelling a bouquet of flowers: this is Marc Chagall's dream of Nice, the city of flowers on the Côte d'Azur. Chagall arrived in Paris from Vitebsk, Russia in 1910 and soon made a name for himself with his art of surreal and poetic dream-visions. This design was appropriated from a print entitled "The Bay of Angels." (Rennert)

"Chagall's first colour lithographs had been drawn whilst he was in New York but it was in the stimulating atmosphere of the Mourlot studio, where Picasso had found such inspiration from 1945, that Chagall's real pleasure in the medium of colour lithography came to full fruition in the years from the beginning of the 1950's."
