"L'Estampe Moderne was a collector's edition of 100 colour lithographs from
the best contemporary artists, appearing in monthly issues of four prints each
between May 1897 and April 1899... Mucha himself contributed two lithographs including
'Salambo-L'Incantation' and also designed the cover with
this narrow panel which was used as all the covers. With a few spare stokes, he
works his magic: classic face, flowing hair, a lithographer's crayon, and voila!
Another idealized Mucha beauty. Interestingly, even a minor Mucha work like this
intrigued the artist's champion and good client Sarah Bernhardt. She had it printed
in New York in 1905 (as a poster with a few embellishing touches by another artist)
to announce her American tour" (Gold,
