The Poretti brewery in Varese, Northern Italy, produced its first
brew on 26th December 1877. Birra Poretti was officially launched
one year later, in 1878. The brewery's founder, Angelo Poretti, was
one of the pioneers of Italian brewing. He introduced Italy to the
brewing methods of Northern Europe which he learned during his many
travels. In recognition of his contribution to brewing in his homeland,
Angelo Poretti became President of the Permanent Committee of Italian
Brewers in 1884. In 2001 Birra Poretti was re-launched by Carlsberg
Italia, using much of the brand’s original identity. It was brought
to the UK in 2006.
A self-taught member of the school of Lombard Naturalism in its last
stages, Cavaleri abandoned
his medical studies in 1888 to devote himself exclusively to painting.
Having begun to specialise in seascapes under the influence of his
contemporaries Pompeo Mariani and Giorgio Belloni in 1890, he later
adopted the anti-naturalistic approach characteristic of the turn
of the century, possibly as a result of his friendship with the Symbolist
poet Gian Pietro Lucini. In addition to his large output of paintings,
he also worked as an illustrator and commercial artist. A regular
participant in the major exhibitions, he achieved considerable success
on the art market and a number of official awards, including a gold
medal at the International Exhibition of Munich in 1902. The prestigious
Galleria Pesaro hosted two solo shows of the artist’s work, one in
1918 and the other in 1935.
This is a selection from the very rare commemorative portfolio published
by the renowned Italian printer Ricordi in 1914. The portfolio consisted
of 70 lithographic plates (smaller versions) of Ricordi's greatest
posters printed between 1895 and 1914. Many of the images in the series
are so rare that they can be found today in no other format. In the
1870s, Ricordi opened an in-house lithography shop to promote its
operas and sheet music business. Ricordi quickly became the leading
lithographer in Italy and by 1895 was creating posters for other clients
such as Campari, the Milan newspaper Corriere della Sera, and the
Mele Department store of Naples. Under the tutelage of Adolfo Hohenstein,
a brilliant stable of artists emerged at Ricordi. Artists including
Cappiello, Caldanzano, Cavaleri, Dudovich, Laskoff, Metlicovitz and
Mataloni brought Art Nouveau, known as Stile Liberty in Italy, to
a world class level. Much like the famous Maitre
de L'Affiche series created by Cheret
in Paris, this portfolio celebrated the rise of the poster - which
in Italy was almost single-handedly accomplished by Ricordi.
