"There is a classicist feeling in this fine design, which makes us assume it's the Muse of Music we see here, Euterpe herself, singing the praises of piano manufacturer Schiedmayer. That would also fit with the personality of the designer, a classically educated pedagog, writer and all-around artist of Karlsruhe: he studied graphic arts and architecture there, took up painting in Paris, and taught interior design and landscaping at the Karlsruhe Technical High School for many years. He also wrote technical books, acted as director of a Black Forest music school, and even got involved in a local manufacture of majolica". (Rennert, PAI-XXV, 374)

Four images. A separate stone was used for each colour, and a print went through the press separately for each stone. The main challenge was of course to keep the images aligned (in register). This method lent itself to images consisting of large areas of flat color, and led to the characteristic poster designs of this period.

Schiedmayer Grand Piano

The Schiedmayer family has been manufacturing famous keyboard instruments for 270 years. Balthasar Schiedmayer built his first clavichord in 1735 in Erlangen. The tradition of making musical instruments was passed down through the generations and families. The Schiedmayer Company (later to become Schiedmayer & Soehne, and Schiedmayer Celesta GmbH) was established in 1809 in Stuttgart by Johann Lorenz Schiedmayer, the famous piano maker. As one of the oldest keyboard manufacturers in the world, Schiedmayer has had many famous customers including Franz Listz, and P.I. Tchaikowsky, Clara Schumann.

Max Laeuger, an initial member of the German work federation (1907), was a multi-talent. The versatility of his artistic working shows up in the fact that he worked as a commercial artist, designer of objects, Keramiker art-relating to crafts, interior and garden architect. Besides he worked also as a writer. In the world exhibitions 1900 in Paris and 1904 in Saint Louis his ceramic, graphic and plastic work was presented. Laeuger is to be quite compared with contemporary artists such as Peter Behrens and Richard Riemerschmid. In ceramic(s) he is considered as one of the forefront in the 20th Century.
