"The 1890's were the heyday of small magazines, most of them
slanting their stories and articles to attract woman readers. Pre-radio
and television, many women had no recreation other than reading, and
while classic books were educational requirements, contemporary magazines
provided a glimpse of the current scene they couldn't obtain otherwise.
Lippincott's, based in Philadelphia, was one such monthly" (Gold
p.74)
"Lippincott's May, in which the effective juxtaposition of
bright contrasting colours produces an effect of gaiety similar
to that of a haphazard nosegay of country flowers
most of
the designs for Lippincott's include a realistic representation
of the magazine itself."
(Keay p.23)
