The first real commercial poster artist to emerge from Holland was
Jan Van Caspel. A portrait painter, who did his (poster) designing
in oils, and generally used models. His use of simplified and stylized
figures, with flat planes of colour, seen in his posters, is shown
here in the central panel showing the workers harvesting a crop of
beans. The poster is for the "Whoogenstraaten Company, purveyors
of fine vegetables, soups and sauces." He uses a wonderfully
designed typeface set against detailed ornate designs. An Art Nouveau
style border design using the bean plant completes a superb composition.
