"Cheret's mastery of colour lithography is evident here; he gets every shade
of the 'Rainbow' (L'Arc-en-Ciel) for this revue (ballet-pantomime) by using three
stones (stone lithography): blue, red and yellow. (Rennert
PAI-VIII, 62) "The Folies Bergere at the edge of Montmarte has
existed for about 100 years. About 1900, after a modest start, it became one of
the leading revue theatres. It was and still is famous for its splendid decorations
and costumes. The program consisted mainly of ballet, pantomime and tableaux vivants.
The Folies quickly acquired a legendary reputation particularly among visitors
from the puritan, Anglo-Saxon world." (Paris
1900 p.86) | |
