"De Riquer was Spain's most successful exponent of the Art Nouveau style,
and this fine work shows that to full advantage
He studied in Rome, Paris
and London, became well acquainted with the Arts and Crafts movement of William
Morris, and became one of the foremost graphic art stylists and innovators on
his return to Spain" (Rennert, PAI-XXV,
470) De Riquer's poster for the Napoleon photographers of Barcelona, is
handled with exceptional skill. A woman clad in renaissance style, symbolically
holds aloft a magnifying glass, which directs sunlight down on to a photo plate.
She is set against a striking scarlet red panel surrounded by a detailed ornate
nature scene of soft delicate pastel hues within which a painter's palette is
symbolically placed just under the woman's left hand. | |
