Smaller Full size version sold for $ 9,200 US Poster Auctions International,
NY Nov 1997. Very Rare. "To advertise cocoa importer Rowntree of York
the Beggarstaffs dispenced with the product, other than a hardly noticeable cup,
and concentrated on an image of prestige. Three dignified figures in period costume,
only one of which is done with any attention to detail. This was one of their
most celebrated images. There was a billboard version, 13 feet high (the largest
of any of their posters), as well as at least two other sizes widely distributes
in Britain, so that it received probably more attention than most if not all of
their other work"(Rennert, PAI-XXV, 186) "The
Beggarstaff's conceptions were to revitalize the art of the poster. Their flat
tones, avoiding outline where possible, and the power and simplicity of their
composition, were a direct influence on a whole generation of poster artists everywhere"
(Weil p.70) Graphic designers around
the world have been influenced by the genius of Beggarstaff. |
