A brilliant composition. By using only the whites of his shirt, the shine of his
shoes and top hat, the faint wisp of smoke rising from the cigarette holder, all
else lost to the black background, we are easily captivated with the intriguing
J.P. The large elegant lettering in vibrant gold is set against the background,
repeated in his watch and chain, and finally frames the entire image. A masterful
bit of graphic design by one England's most celebrated posterists. "The
prolific English artist Dudley Hardy is best known for his work for publications
and the theatre, both as illustrator and posterist. His work for commercial firms
is rarer. Yet his contributions to English poster art is considerable. He really
introduced the colour poster to England" (Rennert,
PAI-XVIII, 129) | |
