Poster Auctions International, N.Y. May 2002
"In 1846 Paris wine agent Joseph Dubonnet decided to enter the
business with a product of his own. With medicinal bitters just coming
into vogue, he chose to base his drink on quinine, and to disguise
its bitter taste, he mixed it with sweet wine from Greece. The result
quickly gained wide acceptance; by the end of the century the company
was producing three million bottles a year and exporting to many foreign
countries" (Gold p.34)
"The Dubonnet poster featured one of Madame Dubonnet' cats
(which was included in the firm's logo). The girl in the green striped
dress is a professional model, a charming soubrette from the Theâtre
des Ambassadeurs named Lise Fleuron. The Poster became so famous
that Miss Fleuron was able to capitalize on it by billing herself
thereafter as The Girl with the Dubonnet Cat"(Wine
Spectator, 4)
