The Portfolio

 

The "Nouveau Salon des Cent" portfolio consists of a hundred posters created by one hundred of the best graphic designers of our time, from 24 different countries including China, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Zimbabwe, the United-States and most of the European countries, as a tribute to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, for the Centenary of his death, 1901-2001. Initiated by the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum Partners' Club. In cooperation with the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum of Albi. The printing was limited to only 380. The posters have been exhibited in major museums and galleries around the world.

 

The Designer - Holger Matthies

 

He was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1940, and apprentice in colour-lithography from 1957 to 1961. In 1961 and 62 he studied at the Works School of Art, and from 1962 to 66, attended the University of Formative Art in Hamburg. He begun to work as a freelance graphic designer in 1966. He was a guest professor at the Hamburg University of Design during the school years 1969/70 and 1984/85, and led works a hops for students at the Luminy Academie in Marseille, at the Ecole des beaux-arts and at the Julian Academy in Paris, and at the Colorado State University. He was on the Examination Committee of the Julian Academy and a judge at the International Poster Biennale and Triennial in Warsaw, Lahti, Colorado and Toyama. His achievements of posters have gained worldwide recognition. Over the past 2 decades he has held poster exhibitions in Warsaw, New York, Washington, Brno, Amsterdam, Berlin, Marseille, Paris, Tokyo, Bucharest, Colorado, Toyama and Palermo. He has won numerous awards and prizes including a Gold Medal from German Poster Museum in Essen, 1976, a Gold Medal from International Poster Exhibition in Warsaw, 1980, the Edwin-Scharff Prize from Hamburg City and a Bronze Medal at the International Poster Competition in Colorado, 1981, the First Prize of the Graphic Designers for the Poster Design Exhibition of Japan, Tokyo, 1982, a Silver Medal from the New York Art Directors Club, 1987, and the Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec Gold Medal at the Triennial of the German Poster Museum in Essen, 1990.

 

Recent exhibitions

 

1985, one-man exhibition for the 100th anniversary of the Museum for Arts and Crafts of Denmark, Copenhagen. 1986, theatre poster exhibition at the German Culture Centres, in Marseille and Paris. 1988, poster exhibition at the State Art Collection Cottbus, DDR. 1989, poster exhibition at the Theatre of Gutersloh City. 1991, poster exhibition at the Alpha Cubic Gallery, Tokyo.
