The Portfolio
The "Nouveau Salon des Cent" portfolio consists of a
hundred posters created by one hundred of the best graphic designers
of our
time, from 24 different countries including China, Japan, Mexico,
Brazil, Zimbabwe, the United-States and most of the European countries,
as a tribute to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, for the Centenary of
his
death, 1901-2001. Initiated by the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum Partners'
Club. In cooperation with the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum of Albi.
The
printing was limited to only 380. The posters have been exhibited
in major museums and galleries around the world. View

The Designer - Dan
Fern
Dan
Fern is an internationally-known graphic artist and designer as
well as being an influential teacher. Trained at Manchester College
of Art he graduated to study at the Royal College of Art, and was
made its first Professor of Graphic Art and Design in 1994. He
is currently Head of the School of Communications at the RCA.
As a professional artist Fern has a string of awards to his credit
including several Gold and Silver awards from the Design & Art
Director's Club (D&AD) and the best Book Design Award from
the Dutch Art Director's Club.
His work has been exhibited in the National Museum of Modern Art
in Japan, The Mirb Foundation in Barcelona, the Smithsonian
Institute in Washington, and is in the permanent collection at
the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
As a teacher as well as in his professional practice, Fern has
been a vigorous promoter of the importance of a close relationship
between the Fine and Applied arts; his ow work as a designer includes
not only projects for the Royal Mail (a set of stamps) record sleeves
(most recently the complete works of Shostakovich for Decca) book
jackets, posters, advertisements etc., but also murals for buildings
and several one-man exhibitions of self-initiated projects.
Fern made his first video piece 'Vergessenes Bild' (Forgotten
Picture) in response to a commission from the Goethe Institute
as part of the major celebration of German Romantic art and music
in 1995. The piece - inspired by a reproduction of a lost work
by Casper David Friedrich - was developed together with the German
composer Detlev Glanert and was premiered at the South Bank in
London, the film being projected above the orchestra in a live
performance.
A second film commission followed in 1996 from the South Bank
Centre itself as part of its season of works by Harrison Birtwhistle.
Fern's video work was made to accompany a performance of Birtwhistle's
piece for oboe and claves, 'Pulse Sampler'.
Fern's recent work includes 'Box Set', (a limited-edition publication
by the Royal College of Art) a mural for the Welcome Foundation
in Manchester, and preparation for an exhibition planned for late
2002 in Tokyo.
