A Masterpiece of German Symbolism/Art Nouveau.
The hour of the shepherd "The moon is red at the
misty horizon; In a fog which dances, the meadow Falls asleep smoky,
and the frog shouts By the green snap rings where a shiver circulates;
The flowers of water close again their corollas; Poplars profile with the
distances, Tight rights and, their dubious spectra; Towards the bushes
the fireflies wander; Cat-hooting wake up, and without noise Row
the black air with their heavy wings, And the zenith fills up deaf gleams.
White, Venus emerges, and it is the Night" Paul Verlaine
(translated from the French) Not unlike the Maitre de L'Affiche series,
L'Estampe Modern was a portfolio printed between 1897-98, published by Imprimerie
Champenois, Paris, contained 24 monthly portfolios, with four original lithographs
in each. Each commissioned only for this series. As well as Mucha,
some of the contributing artists included Rhead,
Meunier, Ibels,
Steinlen, Willette
and Grasset. This is from the series with
the blindstamp in the margin lower right corner. | |
