Armand Berton was born in Paris. He studied at the École des
Arts Décoratifs under Laemlein and at the Beaux-Arts, Paris, under
Aimé Millet and Alexandre Cabanel, but dropped out when he became
deaf. Berton continued his artistic education alone, haunting the
museums of Paris. Armand Berton exhibited at various Paris Salons
from 1875 to 1921. Berton's printmaking included both lithographs
and etchings. (Idbury Prints)
Mucha Cover
Not unlike the Maitre de L'Affiche series, L'Estampe
Moderne was a portfolio printed between 1897-98, published
by Imprimerie Champenois, Paris, contained 24 monthly portfolios,
with four original lithographs in each. Each commissioned only for
this series. Some of the contributing artists included Mucha, Rhead,
Meunier, Ibels, Steinlen, Willette and Grasset.
