Whether in the dance halls of Paris, the American wild west, or up north during
the Gold Rush, the high kicking (cancan) dance hall girls were the main attraction
of the day.
The stylized image of a high kicking lady is reminiscent
of a popular Lautrec image (see Lautrec
poster).
One of the original gold rush towns of the 1890's was Dawson
City, in the Yukon Territories, Canada. In the summer of 1962 the town once again
came alive with gold rush fever, playing host to the "The Gold Rush Festival".
A festival of dance and theatre of the period. It was launched by Tom Patterson,
the founder of the world famous Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada.
